EIÆS or EÆS , P REP. WITH ACC. ONLY. Radical sense, into, and then to:

I. OF P LACE , the commonest usage, eij" a{la into or to the sea, Hom. , etc. :—properly opposed to ejk, ej" sfuro;n ejk ptevrnh" from head to foot, Il.; eij" e[to" ejx e[teo" from year to year, Theocr. :—then, with all Verbs implying motion or direction, ijdei`n eij" oujranovn Il.; eij" w\pa ijdevsqai to look in the face, Ib.:—in Hom. and Hdt. also c. acc. pers., where the Att. use wJ", prov", parav .

2. with Verbs which express rest in a place, when a previous motion into or to it is implied, ej" mevgaron katevqhke , i.e. he brought it into the house, and put it there, Od.; parei`nai ej" tovpon to go to a place and be there, Hdt.

3. with Verbs of saying or speaking, lovgou" poiei`sqai eij" to; plh`qo" to come before the people and speak, Id., etc.

4. elliptical usage eij" jAi?dao , Att. eij" {Aidou [ dovmou" ], ej" jAqhnaivh" [ iJerovn ] to the temple of Athena, etc. ; as in Lat. ad Apollinis, ad Castoris ( sc. aedem); so with appellatives, ajndro;" ej" ajfneivou to a rich mans, Il.

II. OF T IME ,
1. to denote a certain point or limit of time, to, up to, until, ej" hjw` ( Att. eij" th;n e{w ) Od.; ej" hjevlion kataduvnta till sun-set, Ib.; ej" ejmev up to my time, Hdt. :—so with Advs., eij" o{te ( cf. e[" te ) against the time when, Od.; so, eij" povte ; until when? how long? Soph. ; ej" o} until, Hdt.

2. to determine a period, eij" ejniautovn for a year, i.e. a whole year, Hom. ; ej" qevro" h] ej" ojpwvrhn for

the summer, Od.; eij" eJspevran h{kein to come at even, Ar. ; eij" trivthn hJmevran or eij" trivthn alone, on the third day, in three days, Plat. ; ej" tevlo" at last, Hdt. ; oujk ej" ajnabolav" with no delay, Id.;—so with Advs., ej" au[rion Il.; ej" au\qi" or ejsau`qi" Thuc .; eij" e[peita Soph ., etc. ; cf. eijsavpax , eijsovte .
