A. to hit, esp. to hit a mark with an arrow, Hom. , etc. : he mostly constructs it with acc. , when the object hit is alive, with gen. when it is lifeless; so, t. tou` skopou` Xen .;—a prep. is sometimes added, kata; klhi`da, kata; zwsth`ra tuchvsa" »tinav1/4 Il.;— absol. , h[mbrote" oujdÆ e[tuce" Ib.; the part. tucwvn is often joined with bavllein, oujta`n , etc. , Ib.

II. to hit upon, light upon:
1. to meet by chance, meet with, fall in with a person, absol. , Od.; c. gen ., Aesch. , etc. :— aor. 2 part. oJ tucwvn , the first one meets, any one, Lat. quivis , Hes ., Plat. , etc. ; oiJ tucovnte" every-day men, the vulgar, Xen .; so, to; tucovn any chance thing, Plat.

2. to meet with, hit, reach, gain, get, obtain a thing, and in the past tenses (like kevkthmai ), to be in possession of, to have, c. gen ., Od., etc. :—after Hom. also c. acc ., t. misqovn Hdt .; ta; provsfora Aesch. , etc. :— gen. pers. added, to obtain a thing from a person, t. tiv tino" Soph .; tino;" parav tino" Od.

3. also in bad sense, bivh" tucei`n to meet with, suffer violence, Hdt. ; t. kakw`n Eur.
4. absol. to hit the mark, to make a hit, Il., Att. ; so, tucovnte" kalw`" Aesch.
5. to havethe lot or fate, o{" ke tuvch/ whoever draws the lot (to die), Il.
B. intr. to happen to be at a place, ei[per tuvch/si mavla scedovn if by chance she be quite near, Il.

2. the part. is often omitted, e[ndon ga;r ajrti; tugcavnei ( sc. w[n ) Soph. ; eij su; tugcavnei" ejpisthvmwn Plat .:—sometimes indeed tugcavnein is used very much like ei\nai, t. ejn ejmpuvroi" to be engaged in sacrifice, Eur. ; wJ" e{kastoi ejtuvgcanon just as they all were, Xen.

3. in many phrases it is easy to supply a part. , o{ ti a]n tuvcwsi, tou`to levgousi they say whatever comes uppermost (i.e. o{ ti a]n tuvcwsi levgonte" ), Plat.

III. neut. part. tucovn , absol. like parovn , since it so befel, Luc.
2. as Adv. perchance, perhaps, Xen ., Plat.
