A. neuter, with pf. mevmhla , to be an object of care or thought to anyone, c. dat. pers., ajnqrwvpoisi mevlw I am a source of care to men, i.e. am well known to them, Od.; so, jArgw; pa`si mevlousa Ib.; nertevroisi mevlw Eur., etc.

II. most usual in 3 sing. and pl. of act. pres. mevlei, mevlousi ; impf. e[mele Ep. mevle ;f. melhvsei ; inf. pres.

and fut. mevlein and melhvsein : aor. I ejmevlhse : pf. memevlhke ; plqpf. ejmemelhvkei ; Ep. pf. mevmhle , plqpf. memhvlei :— mhv toi tau`ta melovntwn let not these things be a care to thee, Hom.; povlemo" a[ndressi melhvsei Il.; w|/ tovssa mevmhle to whom so great things are a care, Od., etc.:—an inf. often stands as nom., oujk e[melevn moi tau`ta metallh`sai Ib.

III. Med. is used by Poets like Act., to be an object of care, ejmoi; dev ke tau`ta melhvsetai Il.; tajnqavdÆ

what remains should be a care to you, Soph., etc.; rarely impers., mevletaiv moiv tino" Theocr.

2. in Ep. Poets are found pf. and plqpf. pass. mevmbletai, mevmbleto , shortd. for memevlhtai, memevlhto , with pres. and impf. sense, oujkevti mevmbletÆ jAcilleuv" (for mevlei ) Achilles cares no longer for it, Il.; mevmbleto oiJ tei`co" (for e[mele ) the wall was a care to him, Ib.:—the regul. pf. occurs in later Poets, Foivbw/ memelhvmeqa Anth.; 2 and 3 sing. plqpf. memevlhso, -hto , Id., Theocr.

B. trans., c. gen. of persons, to care for, take care of, take an interest in a thing, plouvtoio memhlwv" busied with riches, Il.; polevmoio memhlwv" Ib.; qeoi; tw`n ajdivkwn mevlousin Eur.:—absol. to be anxious, mevlei kevar Aesch., etc.
