ouj, OUÆ, ouj

OUÆ , before a vowel with smooth breathing oujk , with rough breathing oujc , Att. also oujciv , Ep. oujkiv : Adv. used in direct negation (cf. mhv ), not, Lat. non .

A. U SAGE :
I. adhering to single words so as to form a quasi-compd. with them, ouj divdwmi to withhold, oujk ejw` to refuse, oujk ejqevlw nolo, ou[ fhmi nego.

II. as negativing the whole sentence, th;n dÆ ejgw; ouj luvsw Il., etc.
2. in dependent clauses ouj is used,
a. with o{ti or wJ" , after Verbs of saying or knowing, e[lexe wJs {Ellhne" ouj menoi`en Aesch.
b. in Causal sentences, and in Temporal sentences that involve special times, a[cqetai o{ti ouj kavrta qerapeuvetai Hdt.; oujk e[sqÆ ejrasth;" o{sti" oujk ajei; filei` Eur.

3. in a conditional clause mhv is necessary, except,
a. when ouj is closely attached to the Verb (v. supr. 1), ei[ fqonevw te kai; oujk eijw` diapevrsai Il.
b. when the subjoined clause is hypothetical in form only, mh; qaumavsh/", eij polla; ouj prevpei soi (where eij = o{ ti ) Isocr.; deino;n ga;r a]n ei[h prh`gma, eij {Ellhna" ouj timwrhsovmeqa Hdt.

4. ouj is used with Inf. in oratio obl., when it represents the Indic. of oratio recta, levgonte" oujk ei\nai aujtovnomoi Thuc.; oi\mai oujk ojlivgon e[rgon aujto; ei\nai Plat.

5. ouj is used with the Participle, when it can be resolved into a finite sentence with ouj ; katenovhsan ouj pollou;" tou;" Qhbaivou" o[nta" = o{ ti ouj polloiv eijsi , Thuc.

6. Adjectives and abstract Substantives with the Article commonly take mhv (v. mhv B. 6), but ouj is occasionally used, tw`n gefurw`n ouj diavlusin the nondissolution of the bridge, the fact of its not being broken up, Thuc.; so, hJ ouj periteivcisi" Id.

B. A CCUMULATION : the negative is often repeated, so that two negatives do not make an affirmative, Att. , oujk e[stin oujde;n krei`sson fivlou Eur.; kaqeuvdwn oujdei;" oujdeno;" a[xio" oujde;n ma`llon tou` mh; zw`nto" Plat.; oujdeni; oujdamh` oujdamw`" oujdemivan koinwnivan e[cei Id.

C. P LEONASM OF ouj : after Verbs of denying, doubting, and disputing, followed by wJ" or o{ti, ouj is inserted, where in Engl. the negat. is not required, ajmfisbhtei` wJ" ouj dei` divkhn didovnai Plat. Like this is the appearance of ouj in the second member of a negative comparative sentence, h{kei oJ Pevrsh" oujdevn ti ma`llon ejpÆ hJmeva" h] ouj kai; ejpÆ uJmeva" Hdt.

D. in Poetry, if h[ stands before ouj , the two sounds coalesce into one syllable, as in h] ouj, mh; ouj .
E. ouj in connexion with other Particles will be found in alphabetical order, ouj gavr, ouj mhv , etc.
