Pronoun, correlative to the interrog. poi`o" , the indef. poiov" , and the demonstr. toi`o" , Hom., Hes., etc.; strengthd., o{sso" e[hn oi|ov" te , Lat. qualis erat quantusque , Il.: c. acc., oi|o" ajrethvn what a man for virtue, Ib.; often only to be rendered by an Adv., oi|o" mevteisi povlemovnde how he rushes into war, Ib. Usage:

I. oi|o" in an independent sentence expresses astonishment, strengthd. by dhv, oi|on dh; to;n mu`qon ejpefravsqh" ajgoreu`sai why, what a word it has come into thy mind to speak! Od.; so in neut., as Adv., v. infr. v.

2. so in indirect sentences, where no antec. can be supplied, oJrw`n ejn oi{oi" ejsmevn Xen.
II. containing a Comparison, often without an antec., oi|o" ajsth;r ei\si like as a star wanders, Il.; oi|o" kai; Pavri" h\/scune like as Paris also dishonoured, Aesch.:—in this sense, oi|o" is often attached to the case of its antec., pro;" a[ndra" tolmhrouv", oi{ou" jAqhnaivou" (for oi|oi jAqhnai`oi ), Thuc.

2. oi|o", oi{a, oi|on , esp. in Att., often stand for o{ti toi`o", toiva, toi`on , so that the relat. introduces the reason for the preceding statement, a[nakta covlo" lavben, oi|on a[kousen anger seized the king, because of what he heard. Il.

3. but if the Comparison is general, Homer uses oi|ov" te (which must be distinguished from oi|o" te c. inf., v. infr. III . 2), oi|ov" te [Arh" some such one as Ares, Il.; also, oi|ov" ti" the sort of person who, Hom.

4. when a Comparison involves Time, oi|o" o{ te is used, like as when. . , 1 Od.
5. oi|o" is used in many brief Att. phrases, oujde;n ga;r oi|on ajkouvein aujtou` tou` novmou theres nothing like hearing the words of the law, Dem.; —it adds force to the Sup., cwrivon oi|on calepwvtaton , = toiou`ton oi|ovn ejsti calepwvtaton , Xen.

III. oi|o" with inf. implies Fitness or Ability to do, oi|o" e[hn televsai e[rgon te e[po" te so ready was he to make good both deed and word, Od.; oi|o" e[hn bouleuevmen hjde; mavcesqai so good both at counsel and in fight, Plat.; to; pra`gma mevga kai; mh; oi|on newtevrw/ bouleuvsasqai the matter is great and not such as for a young man to advise upon, Thuc.; without an inf., oJ dÆ oi|ov" ejstin oijkouro;" movnon fit only [to be] a house-dog, Ar.

2. but this sense is commonly expressed by oi|ov" te , c. inf., fit or able to do, levgein oi|ov" te kajgwv Id.; oi|ov" te h\n peivqein Dem.: freq. in neut. sing. and pl., oi|ovn te ejstiv and oi|av te ejstiv, oi|ovn te givgnetai it is possible, Hdt., Att.; without inf., oi|ovn te ejstivn it is possible, oujc oi|ovn te ejstivn it cannot be, Ar.; with a Sup., kalo;n wJ" oi|ovn te mavlista as beautiful as is possible, Plat.; wJ" oi|ovn te dia; bracutavtwn Id.

IV. the relat. is in Att. often repeated in the same clause, oi|j e[rga dravsa" oi|a lagcavnei kakav after what deeds what sufferings are his! Soph.; oi{an ajnqÆ oi{wn qumavtwn cavrin what thanks and for what offerings! Id.

V. as Adv. in neut., to add force, oi|on ejershvei" how fresh, Il.; oi|a ajtavsqala Od.:—the regul. Adv. oi{w" is seldom used, oi|o" w]noi{w" e[cei" in what a state art thou for such a man! Soph.

2. in Comparisons, as, like as, just as, Hom., Trag.; oi|av ti" ajhdwvn Aesch.;— oi|on o{te like as when, cf.
