Radical sense, to receive an impression from without, to suffer, as opp. to doing, e[rxan tÆ e[paqovn te Od.; dra`n kai; pavscein , etc. ; oJmoivw" p. tiniv to be in the same case with. . , Hdt.

II. the sense is often limited by some word expressing good or evil:
1. kakw`" pavscein to be ill off, in evil plight, unlucky, Od., etc. ; kakw`" p. uJpov tino" to be ill used, ill treated by. . , Aesch .; often with an Adj. , kakav, lugra; p . Il., etc. ; deina; p . Dem. ; also with a Subst. , a[lgea p . etc. , Hom.

2. eu\ pavscein to be well off, in good case, lucky, Theogn ., etc. ; also, to receive benefits, opp. to eu\ dra`n , Aesch. , etc. ; so, ajgaqa; p . Hdt. , etc.

3. without a limiting word, it always refers to evil, being used for kakw`" or kaka; p., mavla pollÆ e[paqon Od., etc. ; mhv ti pavqh/" lest thou suffer any ill, Hom. ; ei[ ti pavqoimi or h[n ti pavqw , a euphemism, if aught were to happen to me, i.e. if I were to die, Hdt. , Att.

4. tiv pavqw ; to express the extreme of perplexity, what is to become of me? what can I do? Hom. , etc. ; tiv pavscei" ; what are you about? Ar.

5. the interrog. tiv paqwvn ; expresses something amiss, tiv paqovnte" gai`an e[dute ; what ailed you that you died? Od.

III. to be affected in a certain way, be in a certain state of mind, entertain certain feelings, Thuc ., Plat. ; o{per a]n oiJ polloi; pavqoien as would be the case with most men, Thuc. ; i{na mh; taujto; pavqhte tw`/ i{ppw/ that it be not with you as with the horse in the fable, Arist. ; uJi>ko;n pavscei he is swinishly disposed, Xen .; so of things, pavscei tou`to kai; kavrdama this is just the way with cress, Ar.
